Wow. I mean, just -wow-.
I'm going to start off by saying that this is simply THE most beautiful landscape I have -ever- seen in a video game. Funny it should come out of the same engine that created the unrealistic, boring junk found in the base maps. More than anything I've ever seen before THIS map shows what the Tribes 2 engine is capable of. I know what you're thinking: what about Insurrection and the other creations by Akira? Impressive as those were I had never imagined Akira's level of quality would be impossible in T2. On the otherhand, I was beginning to think that realistic terrain was impossible in Tribes 2.
This should make the original Tribes 2 dev team piss their pants for sure, I was in awe with the scale of it all - I appeared to be moving so slow I thought somethign was wrong with my shrike, even though I was going 350kph.
The map was obviously not designed with gameplay as its primary focus, but that's just fine: this map is one to behold for its achievements in terrain realism and scale. Nothing beats driving down a mountain at 900kph in a grav cycle until you hit a ledge and explode.
It's been a while since Captain Radium has released a map, and it's easy to see where his efforts have been focused.

Holy ****... i agree with V5Planet... that is possibly the best looking terrain i have EVER seen... Haha... what's this with a Motorcycle rental shop? hehe... Ladies and Gentlemen, i believe we have in the making, another extrordinary mapper coming to us quickly...

ditto what everyone is saying about the terrain it is to say beautiful with what u did with it so crisp looking that i think it truly shows the art of using the terrain editor. however what i didn't like was that u in all ur hard efforts to make such a awesome map u neglected to make the interiors for this (it would look so cool if u took a little more time and have a remake of this mpa with better buildings) only my opinion. i still love it

Wow, was this terrain started from a png image? Or, was it a set of terrain operations mirroring this real mountain range? This most certainly shows the kind of scale and sense of "realism" in detail that this engine can produce (even with FPS staying just OK with such high visibility).

I am happy people like the terrain. I know the base positioning and layout is kind of hohum. The map wasn't meant to be a magnum opus or anything. I just made it a test of the concept and techniques for making true to life scaled terrain from real world altimetry data. Making big maps like this is full of pitfalls and unforseen bugs. I tried to work them all out and had a friend of mine test the map. Everything seemed to work out all right (except the bots are dumber than usual). If anyone notices any problems running the map let me know.

Jeez, again I must agree with v5Planet down there. One really notable thing is that, even at extreme speeds on a shrike, you always seem to be at a crawl... Dunno what may be causing it (maybe the extreme size of the map?) but it is sort of annoying. It doesn't hurt the map in any way, but it's there. Cappers shall have a fun time with this one, the bases are pretty close (even if the distance is fairly large) if you do great skiing. It is also a sniper's (excuse the term here) wet dream, HIGH visiblilty, plenty of mountains to hide behind... Joy! There are some real perks for defenders too, as the area that is between the bases is a perfect area to pick off would-be cappers with mortars. There are also quite a few good locations for remote stations too, and (in theory, I haven't tested it yet) you can shoot mortars all the way across the chasm. (again, maybe with the mortar spamming part) The scenary alone makes it worth the download, so get up there and download it if you haven't already!

This map kicks ass! Your shrike seems to be moving slow because on real scale it is: The speed of a shrike is about equivalant to that of an attack helicopter really. As for the terrain, This represents to me what T2 COULD be... Rather than the toyish base terrains. Good job... I sincerely hope we see more from this author.

This map is the best map I have played. The terrain alone will have you breathless. The map is huge, and you'll find yourself pausing to take in the scenery. Teamwork is heavily based, this map has everything. I found myself going to the top of the tallest mountain, and skiing in heavy faster than a shrike moves. driving a grav cycle down the mountain at 500km/h is something that you will be doing again and again. Things like getting a gravcycle up to 500km/h just before flying off a mountain and ejecting and skiing down, as you see your grav cycle slam into the bike rent place is priceless. Get this map. Now.

Terrain ownz, utterly stunning. Grav bike coasting, that is if you don't explode on the way down. This map is breathtaking.

This map is amazing. This map is inspiring. I don't like to give A+'s... but since CTF gameplay might actually take away from the "play" factor of this awesome T2 demonstration, I gotta say it deserves every bit of the top grade. Don't expect to play much CTF, just have fun and take-in the view !!!

WOW! Absolutely breath taking..one almost gets caught up in just the terrain and not the game at hand...quite impressive :D i think the slow shrike thing is the result of a very LOW vehicle ceiling hieght..i had that problem in one of my maps where i forgot to raise the ceiling hieght and the V-pad was ABOVE the hieght...the result: very slow shrikes that say they are going 400kph...just raise the "vehicle cieling hieght" along with the mission ceiling and you should be golden...other than that: AWESOME MAP!!!

by Captain Radium on January 14, 2002 · Rating:

Actually the mission flight ceiling is set at 2700 meter, 700 meters above the highest terrain. The sensation of slow flight is an illusion created by the fact that you are small in relation to the terrain itself. If you fly 10 or 20 meters off the ground you realize you are still moving fast.

Regarding the distance of the view: The reason I can push the fog back is because in making these maps the size of each pixel of terrain is larger. This allows less fog distance while keeping the polygon count reasonable.
The price paid for this is that close up detail of the terrain is lost with a resulting lack of intimacy with the ground you are standing on. This also contributes to the illusion of moving slowly.

This is the type of map that really can show case the T2 engine. Huge vast landscapes, long viewable distances (1,000M +)and a gorgeous sky. This is the type of map in which 80 players could easily have fun on. Thanks to this I know now the laser range finder maxs out at 999 meters. I can't wait for servers to run this map. I'm a big fan of large maps with high flight ceilings, and long viewable distances. 2 thumbs way up!

"Echo Storm realizes that his first map needs a little more work before he releases it." GREAT JOB! good gosh I just thought a something.... What will this guy do when T3 comes out?!?!? How the heck did you get that terrain detail? I been workin' for hours and can't get that kind of stuff. good job

by EEPROM on January 31, 2002 · Rating:

Nice, very nice! God, if only I could do this type of work in a short period of time. Base layout blows but the terrain detail is god like! It would take me years to do this type of terrain work, years!

mmmm, lets see, what can I say that hasnt already been told? I wonder... Ah I know!

The first time I loaded up this map it was on a CTF game my friend was hosting. I thought it was gonna be just a bunch of hills for some skiing and the like. I spawned in the base.
I suitup in my Assasin suit that I always do and I jump out. The only way I cna describe the feeling was by being totally blown away. I just stood there staring out at my computer screen and I didnt even notice when I got killed several times.this map is reallly something. its what a map SHOULD be. Everysingle map in creation looks dinky in comparison.

One thing I can say is that this map revitilised my intense love whit Tribes2. I was begining to get bored and was moving on to Warcraft III, no Im playing Tribes 2 Everysingle day nonestop.

I think you should make a seige map on this scale. Then everyone in the Seige community will know what "think big" REALLY means.

Keep it up man :D

This map rules! No wonder you got so many good comments. The first time i ever played this map was on a construction server. We hiked up and went skiing down. I love this map. Nice work. Keep it up ;)

this map is SOOOOOO GOOOD....if only i had not gotten that ATI 9800 XT video card....it isnt compatible with Tribes 2 at all cause its sooo new...*sniff*

by starstriker1 on May 14, 2005 · Rating:

What're you talking about? Yes it is, I can play tribes 2 with that card. Just make sure you're using openGL in the settings, and that antialiasing and anistrophic filtering are off on the card.
