Map Details for Twin Towers

This is an idea that I've had since back in the days of Tribes 1. Back then I had made a map called "Two Towers" (which you can still see on my Tribes 1 Site), and have been wanting to make a new version of it for Tribes 2 since then. I had a lot of other ideas that I wanted to try first, so this kept getting put on the back burner. Then the WTC was attacked, and I decided to get off my butt and make this as a tribute.

Each team has a tall tower (600m, or 2000ft), with multiple power systems that control different things. It's a very vertical map, requiring decent jetting skills, so I wouldn't consider it a newbie-friendly map. It's more of an advanced map. It can make for some very different and refreshing strategies. The visible distance and fog were adjusted for the pictures so you can see the towers. In gameplay, the fog will actually be much thicker.

This map is awful. It's so incredibly convoluted that you can't get anywhere. The enemy has great routes to your gens, but you're screwed if you're trying to get to them. For example, try flying up to the defense gen without getting stuck in the forcefield. Normally I'm a NecroBones fan, but this map blows hard.

I just got done playing the map. It kicks ass. So do all of NecroBones's maps. Oh Necro, one more thing. I foung that in your tutorial, you map a typo. When you mentioned how to build the spawngraph, you typed in the wrong run command. I really likes the tutorial. It helped me make my first map. Just so you know here is the real run prompt. C:/dynamix/tribes2/gamedata/tribes2.exe -spnbuild missionfilename mission type. That is the real prompt. I hope you are not offended. I'm really sorry if i offend you

A Im from New York and was very much affected by what happened here. This map was done in good taste and is an excellent map. As for those with fps problems seriously upgrade your machine or get a better modem. If you cant do that too bad because your missing out on alot of good maps then. As for the comments from Flying Elmo snipers rule I think not Im very capable of flying well enough so snipers have a hard enough time. Ive also defended and Captured the flag extremely well. On another note that snipers rule while I was defending the flag someone in Heavy armor positioned themself very well and was just mortaring my defenses to crap at a certain point. So this is a very well done map for any type of player. Including elfers if anybody has tried its very amusing to elf someone completely and watch them fall. Its a bit frustrating to protect everything with newbie teams but due to the positons of the Generators but thats it. Otherwise excellent map Necro.

I havn't played this map yet, but I do have to say that, I DO hope that the OB is VERY constricting or else game play will be terrible. (OB = Out of Bounds)

I would say A- The flag setup is easy to defend as long at the gens stay up. I find this map enjoyable to play, and I don't have FPS problems. All I have is a 600Mhz Duron and a GeForce2MX.

Alright, let me clarify. I have never really gotten into maps that basically take as many buildings as possible and put them close to or on top of eachother. "Lets take some crap, throw it on some other crap, and call it a map." There is no style in that. There is no real gameplay in that either. In this particular map, Necro has used large structure after large structure to create the tower. There are at least a hundred places to hide and camp, and in a stalemate situation there is virtually no hope of getting your flag back. Not only that, but the map is greatly unbalanced for anything other than light armor. Offensive snipers reign supreme. Its silly...most games turn into a sniper fest. I dislike how closed off the flag is. A heavy simply has to place an inven right above the flagroom and spam down nonstop, and no-one is getting that flag. When I judged this map, I judged it as a map rather than a memorial. And what i've said is the truth-the gameplay here is basically as llama as it can get. I can see that some effort went into this map, and thats why I didn't give it an "F". Necro, you need to spend more time balancing your maps though.

Well I played it. It's okay. And by the way I think that fps is pretty elaborate, I just love running after someone and watch him or her just stand bouncing back and forth cause of lagg, or if it happens to me. And you end up losing him or I end up killed...and I dont know about you but lagg, loss or fps is part of gameplay DOES effect gameplay and can KILL gameplay. To Necro...if I sounded like I insulted you sorry...just by reading the name I was mad alittle. BUT you did it in good tast.

Oh, and one note, complaining about the framerate here is just petty. I have a relatively average system (Athlon 850, GF2MX), but running Linux means that the GL support is somewhat less than windows. However, I have no problems with this map because I took the time to configure my graphics settings, and I have plenty of room to tweak them further. I've seen only one map (which was a complete novelty map) where I simply couldn't compensate for lots of textures and objects with tweaking graphics settings. If you're going to complain about the map, I think you owe it to the mapper to at least pick on real issues, like gameplay, and elaborate on your problems rather than just stuff like "gameplay sucks". It's pretty depressing that the crappy reviews and grades of this map are both from active mappers.

I see this map as being very similar to Urban Warfare, not in gameplay, but in that considering that the map is completely serverside, it's a fine implementation of the basic concept, but it's a concept that really can't be tackled well as a serverside map given the existing prefabs. Gameplay is pretty fun, but once strong strategy gets involved, it can get kind of tedious using a full bar of energy to get to the next level, wait, repeat, and get killed once you get to the downed generator and load in the bottom of the tower. Because of the difficulty of jetting around the tower, people tend to just stay generally where they spawn, which can be very bad when you need a concentrated force to take a heavy out of your flagbase. As I believe Bones's note says, this isn't a newbie-friendly map. With a team of experienced players, preferably ones who know the map, this can be a fun map, but mismatches in team skills can get amplified greatly by the intimidating vertical structure. That said, the map is still laid out well. The forcefields around the flag are powered by a solar panel at the top of the enemy base around the back, and guarded by a sentry turret. Without being guarded, it can be taken out easily, but it doesn't take a whole lot of defense to keep people away from it. The defense gens likewise can be taken out easily, if the defenders aren't paying attention, but a little work and they're not difficult to defend. The ops gens are the big difficulty from a defenders standpoint, as the inventory stations are so crucial to this map, and if you have enemies in your ops base (above the flag base), they can be an awful hassle. If they have heavies there, lights going in to try and repair the generators stand little chance, and maneuvering your own heavies to try and battle them is difficult because of the jetting involved. Your best hope is to make sure that you have inventory stations placed intelligently around your base in places where they're accessible yet unlikely to be destroyed by the enemy. All in all, Twin Towers has potential to be a great map, but the awkwardness of stacking prefabs combined with players who are generally of little use diminishes it. As for the tasteful/less side of it, I don't particularly care, I just want to stop getting on crappy teams when it loads. ;)

Hey guys, just thought I'd jump in with some comments. I don't think it's too soon. When it went into testing on the server (sept 12 or 13, only a day or two after the incident), THAT might have been too soon to release it. I left it in testing for nearly a month on my server.. :) Besides, it's not like these towers actually LOOK like the WTC towers. If I wanted to be tasteless I'd have made them toppled over with bodies and crashed shrikes strewn about. Yes, I have a sick enough mind to come up with such ideas, but as someone thankfully said below, this was done tastefully and as a good tribute. I really don't like it when people insinuate that I'm being insensitive, because as a general rule, I try to be more sensitive than those around me. I've even seen players on my server who said they were deeply and personally affected by the WTC attack, and -loved- this map and were very touched by the tribute. I take that as a good sign. :) I say this truthfully- I did this with the best of intentions. Even though a friend of mine eventually pointed out the irony of a having a tribute in a war-based game. :)

Definately the most redeeming part of this map is sitting in the enterance to your flag room and blasting the enemies with Necro's Railgun. That, or is it running around in an admin Shrike and getting to the top of the tower in .8 seconds flat...or maybe it's the proverbial look on your opponent's face when they cannot find their own generators - you get the picture. This map is a while lot of fun to play, whether you're offense, defense, or anything else. The FPS is surprisingly good for the large amount of base objects. There are also a perfect amount of mid platforms; enough to facilitate mediums and heavies getting across in the air, but few enough to make jet skill important. It's also nice to be able to get back onto your base in heavy armor (*coughcoughAirSupportcoughcough*). Good map overall.

WILLYNILL,i take offense in what you said.He had every right to release, and Bytor did good in releasing it.As for FPS,im doing fine on a TNT2 for gods sake.Just because you dislike NecroBones doesnt mean you have to make an ass of yourself.

I'm a sucker for maps that really give an aspect of height. It's about time someone did something like this for Tribes 2. People who don't think this map plays should really check it out on Necrobones' server. It's an incredibly fun experience. I know for a fact he did not use worldcraft on this - all those bases come from the game and were skillfully stacked on top of each other. And besides, if those were custom buildings it wouldn't be server side. ;) Anyway, this map's a blast, but it's not for everyone, especially after the recent tragedy in New York and Washington...

This is great work, NecroBones. Although it may be simply a memorial map and not used, it is nevertheless a good map. One word of caution to anyone that intends on downloading this map...if you have a bad case of vertigo, dont do it (i nearly fell out of my chair crying) And, how did you build that monstrosity of a tower? If you'd care to show a n00b how to use worldcraft...hed be much ablidged. Great map, it does what it was made to do, honor september 11.

This is a good idea, but this is a bad time to put it to use. I know this is a tribute, but this is a bad time to employ it. You shoulda kept the name "Two towers". The map looks fine, its just that this is a touchy subject right now. It considered sacred. This A is to outweigh that D

Nice way to tribute your fellow americans, but this map plays like shit. Besides the fact that fps are terrible, how can you expect any reasonable gameplay for this? Redefining gameplay is one thing, but making one not realistically playble is another. Nice try, falls short though. No pun intended.
